Water has always been central to the development of human civilizations, and it’s no different in Wayanad, located in the Western Ghats of Kerala. This region is not only picturesque but also known for the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s a place of natural beauty, perfect for those looking for adventure or just a peaceful break. Our journey begins in Kozhikode, from where we travel to Wayanad to explore its charming hill stations and take in the sights.
First, we visit the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, rich in birdlife like Babblers and jungle fowls. Next, we’ll explore the Edakkal Caves, where ancient cave paintings dating back to 6000 BC reveal early human history. Our trip continues to the Ambalavayal Heritage Museum, housing a vast collection of artefacts from as early as the 2nd century.
The following day is set for thrilling experiences, starting with a hike to the Meenmutty Waterfalls. The view here, especially of the Banasura Sagar Dam, is breathtaking. We then proceed to Neelimala View Point for panoramic views of the waterfall, a delightful sight after a rewarding trek. Our last stop is the Soochipara Waterfall, also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, enveloped in lush greenery and offers a splendid view.
This trip to Wayanad promises to be an enchanting and memorable journey, showcasing one of India’s treasured places.
When you arrive at Kozhikode railway station, our representative will meet you and then you will travel to Wayanad, which is about 130 kilometers away and takes around three hours to reach. Wayanad is one of the leading hill stations in Kerala and a favorite spot for a weekend trip from Bangalore. The climate here is nice all year round, and it’s known for receiving some of the heaviest rainfall in South India. Once you reach, you will check into your hotel and stay overnight in Wayanad.
Start your day with breakfast and then go on a day-long tour of Wayanad. You’ll see the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, Edakkal Caves, Soochippara Waterfalls, and Pookot Lake. The Muthanga sanctuary, spread over 345 sq km, is full of diverse plants and trees like Maruthi, Karimaruthi, Rosewood, and others. It’s home to many birds and animals too.
Next, explore the Edakkal Caves, known for their ancient cave paintings believed to be from 6000 BC. These caves showcase carvings of people, animals, and daily use objects, telling us about the early civilized societies.
Don’t miss the Phantom Rock, an intriguing archaeological spot with a skull-shaped rock sitting on a boulder, created from large metamorphic rocks.
Also, visit the Ambalavayal Heritage Museum, which has a vast collection of artifacts from as far back as the 2nd century, showing the advanced civilization of ancient Wayanad.
After a day full of exploration, head back to your hotel in Wayanad for the night.
After your breakfast, get ready to enjoy some exciting outdoor activities in Wayanad like nature walks, trekking, and boating, which are major attractions here.
At Meenmutty waterfalls, witness the grandeur of Wayanad’s tallest and most stunning waterfall. Nestled in a dense, green forest, Meenmutty cascades down from 300 meters in three levels, each offering a unique trekking experience. Start with a short walk from the parking lot to the first level. Climb up rocky steps to reach the second level, enjoying views of the river and lush greenery. The journey to the third level is more challenging, involving a slippery trek with ropes and steep sections, but the top offers awe-inspiring views of the Banasura Sagar Dam and its valleys.
Next, visit Banasura Sagar Dam, India’s biggest earthen dam and the second largest in Asia, known for its stone and boulder construction. The dam’s clear waters and small islands make it a paradise for photographers. Here, you can also go for a nature walk or enjoy a speed boat ride (charges apply).
Don’t miss Neelimala View Point, which provides a mesmerizing view of Meenmutty falls and the surrounding valleys. Reaching this spot involves a short trek through a landscape adorned with diverse flora and the scent of coffee, making it a must-visit location in Wayanad.
Explore Soochipara waterfall, also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfall, surrounded by a dense green forest. The waterfall drops from 200 feet and is perfect for trekking and rock climbing enthusiasts. A 2 km walk is required to reach this beautiful spot.
After a day filled with adventure, head back to your hotel in Wayanad for a restful night’s stay.
Once you’ve had your breakfast, leave the hotel and head to Kozhikode airport or railway station, which is 90 km away and takes about 3 hours to reach. Take with you the joyful memories of your stay.
